It started as a term from the 1970s, grown from a combination of physical exhaustion and emotional emptiness. Today it is known as one of the biggest challenges in the workplace in the Netherlands. The figures are staggering: one in five employees who report sick for a long period of time suffer from burnout complaints, an increase that threatens to rise to one in three. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#039;s more than just a label; it is a journey that begins with more subtle signals. From boundless motivation to cynicism and ultimately complete exhaustion, the stages of burnout are insidious. Employees become trapped in a vicious circle of overload and reduced brain activity.<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An average burnout lasts almost a year, with enormous costs for employers and a profound impact on the individual. But it is not just a matter of work, it is a combination of private life and professional responsibilities.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the causes and signals is crucial.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sensitive personality, sense of responsibility and perfectionism are often mentioned as risk factors. It is about more than just psychological strain; it is a disturbed balance between load and load capacity, between carrying load and carrying capacity.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there is also hope. Burnout is not the same as depression. It has a more favorable natural history and can recover with proper rest and support. It is essential to take preventive measures after recovery to prevent recurrence.<\/span><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a society we must become aware of the impact and preventive measures. From clear job descriptions to encouraging autonomy and offering recovery moments; employers play a key role in addressing this issue.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it starts with self-awareness and recognizing signals. Listening to your body, setting boundaries, and embracing the art of relaxation are just a few steps on the path to balance.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnout is a challenge that can affect anyone. It requires a collective effort to restore balance, not only in the workplace but also in everyday life. It is a journey to &#039;Being in Balance&#039;, a way back from burnout, a path to recovery and resilience.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br \/><p><b>What is a burnout?<br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnout is the result of long-term overload, both in the workplace and in personal situations. It manifests itself by a characteristic pattern of complaints, arising from a mix of <\/span><b>built-up tension, intense fatigue and difficulty with decision-making<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Decreasing vitality characterizes this phase, in which recovery and development of crucial hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline do not take place sufficiently due to a lack of rest.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Burnout is a physiological condition in which the patient is emotionally and physically exhausted and can perform little or nothing.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The development of burnout is a gradual process that does not occur suddenly. Instead, there are several signals, both physical and psycho-emotional, that manifest over time. The distinction between burnout and depression is essential; the first mainly concerns an energy disorder with a constant energy deficit at the interpersonal level. Although depressive symptoms may occur, burnout usually has a more favorable natural course, where sufficient rest can ultimately reduce the symptoms.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term burnout was first used in the early 1970s by the American psychotherapist Herbert\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freudenberger and Christina Maslach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The view of the latter has now become dominant. In her view, burnout consists of three more or less related phenomena: <\/span><b>exhaustion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (extreme fatigue), <\/span><b>cynicism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (having distance from the work or the people with whom one works), and <\/span><b>lower self-esteem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of one&#039;s own competencies. These are also the three aspects included in the burnout test Maslach Burnout Inventory, which has been known since 1984\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MBI) prevention.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much stress at work and in private life would be causes of burnout. A sensitive personality with an above-average sense of responsibility, a low l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body consciousness (or high body consciousness but the signals are ignored) and the tendency towards perfectionism are said to be risk factors. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays it is becoming increasingly clear how chronic stress and overload can lead to reduced brain activity or brain damage.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After recovery from a burnout, it is very important to analyze what helped the person to prevent recurrence. This means that attention must be paid to preventive measures and strategies to prevent a new burnout and strengthen resilience.<\/span><\/p><p><b>What are the first 4 phases of a burnout?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Source: psychologist Herbert Freudenberger):<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee is super motivated<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Someone who always steps up when there is something to do, nothing is too much, works through lunchtime (even when he really doesn&#039;t have to). <\/span><i style=\"font-weight: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nice, but make sure this team member doesn&#039;t overextend himself!<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/li><\/ol><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee is busy work, work, work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the next phase you see that he goes even faster<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work than normal, and you can clearly see that (all actions are faster).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask for help? Whoa!<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee has no time for himself<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employee works longer hours outside working hours. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also work on weekends.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee receives the first complaints<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Poor sleep, not feeling well, stomach ache m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but your team member doesn&#039;t really know what it is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it will pass.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/li><\/ol><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you recognize these first signals? Then it is important to start the conversation now and not wait until the next phases are introduced. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often the following symptoms also start to require more and more attention.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br \/><b>What are the symptoms of a (threatened) burnout?<\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a burnout, you have usually been suffering from these three things for six months. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you recognize these signals?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) You have 3 or more <\/span><b>tension complaints<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as:<\/span><br \/><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially physical fatigue: an exhausted feeling<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and mental fatigue: difficulty maintaining attention (concentration) and\/or remembering things (memory);<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restless sleep<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being irritable (easily angry or irritated)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannot tolerate crowds or noise<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cry easily<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worry<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a hunted feeling<\/span><\/li><\/ul><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) You feel that you can no longer cope with the many problems in your life. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You feel powerless, as if you no longer have control over your situation. Like you&#039;re losing control of your life.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) You are no longer able to continue doing your normal daily activities properly. For example at work, study, at home, in your contacts or in traffic.<\/span><br \/><b><\/b><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><b>Other complaints you should pay attention to?<\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone with a burnout can sometimes also develop physical complaints in response, such as:<\/span><br \/><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headache<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dizziness<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chestpain<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">palpitations<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach upset or abdominal pain<\/span><\/li><\/ul><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you ignore these signals? What can you expect then?<\/span><br \/><p><b>The following 6 phases of a burnout:<\/b><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything for work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<br \/><\/span>In this phase, your colleague only focuses on work, there is no time for hobbies, friends and family fade into the background. But if you ask how he\/she is doing, the answer is invariably: &#039;Good&#039;. However, the work is starting to suffer.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an employee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critical, cynical and dissatisfied <br \/><\/span>Others don&#039;t do the job as well as he does, at least according to him. You notice that he is critical, cynical and dissatisfied. Other team members begin to suffer from his attitude.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee takes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distance from the team<br \/><\/span>Your team member becomes depressed, no longer chats with the team, isolates himself. He feels sick more and more often.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee shows <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different behavior<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage you often see that those around you ask more often if there is something wrong with him. However, the employee prefers to be left alone and does not understand the fuss.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee only experiences it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking responsibilities<br \/><\/span>There is no more enthusiasm, your colleague only feels responsibilities, he has a lot to do and can no longer relax. Nothing comes naturally anymore.\u00a0<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee experiences <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no fun<br \/><\/span>In this phase there is nothing fun anymore, there is only emptiness and chances are that only distractions such as food, sex, alcohol, drugs can fill the void a little. Emotionally unstable, with mood swings like a rollercoaster, this manifests itself in irritability and constant dissatisfaction.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a mental level, concentration problems, forgetfulness and a constant feeling of tension can predominate. Thoughts seem foggy, fear and panic lie just beneath the surface, and self-esteem gradually sinks.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Employee suffers from <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depressive moods<br \/><\/span>A feeling of exhaustion, lost and insecure, he sighs a lot, he makes derogatory comments about his assignments and the work he completes.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an employee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnout<br \/><\/span>The employee has collapsed mentally and physically. Low energy is the new normal, while hyperventilation and a tight feeling in the chest are becoming more frequent. Headaches, stomach and intestinal complaints claim their share, while muscles in the neck, shoulders and back feel tense. Palpitations and dizziness become regular companions, while fatigue determines the days.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress hormones have taken control of the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ol><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery can only be initiated after acceptance of the burnout. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The longer one waits, the higher the threshold for reintegration.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is therefore not only about early recognition of the signals that may indicate a (impending) burnout, but also about taking appropriate action.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it is important to know when you are more likely to develop a burnout.<\/span><br \/><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>When am I at extra risk of burnout?<br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone can become overstressed and burn out. The chance of this is greater<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you have experienced many things in the past that cause tension<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you have ever been stressed<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you have been ill a lot in the past year<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you don&#039;t know how to arrange things and who can help you<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you receive little support from those around you<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you avoid tackling or solving problems, if you always want to do well and cannot say no<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Being in Balance coaching &#039;Back from Burnout&#039;<br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Being in Balance &#039;Back from Burnout&#039; coaching program has been specially developed to effectively guide employees who have a burnout so that they can return to their work with full energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clients indicate that they particularly appreciate the body-mind scan of Being in Balance because they can follow their own process measurably, visibly and tangibly through the biofeedback on the computer screen. After 100 days, the final scan showed that an average stress reduction of no less than 50% had been achieved.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/span><b>To conclude<br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we conclude this journey through the theme of burnout, I invite you to consciously look at the preciousness of your energy.
